About Enable Social Enterprises
The impact of not having access to employment and training can be debilitating. Unemployment is a major reason for poverty and poverty is the major cause of housing stress and homelessness. There is a dire need for social enterprise in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, rated as some of the highest areas of social and economic disadvantage in Australia. Unemployment rates are significantly higher than that of the Victorian state average and youth unemployment is reported to be pushing up to 40%. In addition, employment rates for people with a disability show they are 50% less likely to have a job, ranking Australia 21 out of 29 of the OECD countries. These are serious social issues that are at the heart of our reason for being and why we work across Melbourne’s north.
Founded in September 2013, Enable is an innovative not for profit organisation operating new models for supportive employment and training to tackle high unemployment head-on in Melbourne’s north. As a social enterprise, Enable’s vision is a connected community without disadvantage. Our mission is to break unemployment cycles by enabling disadvantaged job seekers to connect with community and improve prospects of participating in gainful employment through providing innovative and supportive work and learning programs. We achieve this in the context of our commercial ventures such as our IT Recycling Centre in Maribyrnong (commenced May 2016) and our online shop, www.intheclick.org.au (commenced trading in late 2014). Enable does not received any government funding.
Our values represent the dealings of our people, with all people. Our decision to enter into the Computer Recycling sector is simple – the e-waste sector is growing at a rate of 10% per year and this means Enable can generate a robust level of trade to support people from disadvantaged backgrounds to improve their likelihood of accessing jobs of the future in this growing Sector.
Our IT Recycling Centre operates under the Australian Standard AS/NZS 5377:2013 Collection, storage, transport and treatment of end-of-life electrical and electronic equipment. Operating in a quality focused and controlled environment means that participants in our programs are gaining invaluable skills and experience and coupled with our upbeat and supportive work and learning environment, this serves to assist participants to improve access to employment in the open labour market.
